Juan Vicente Perez Mora, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest man , has passed away at the remarkable age of 114, according to an announcement by Freddy Bernal, governor of Tachira, Venezuela, where Mora resided.

Described as an “archetype of a man” by Bernal, Mora was celebrated for his humility, hard work, peaceful nature, and dedication to family and tradition. Born on May 27, 1909, in San Jose de Bolivar, Venezuela, Mora began working at the age of 5, assisting his family with harvesting coffee and sugar cane.

As an adult, he served as a sheriff, specializing in resolving land disputes. Mora shared 60 years of marriage with his wife, Rosario Gardia, until her passing in 1997.

In 2019, he celebrated his 110th birthday, earning the distinction of being Venezuela’s first authenticated male supercentenarian. Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief of Guinness World Records, hailed Mora’s remarkable life, noting the honor of recognizing Venezuela’s oldest living man.

Following Mora’s passing, the title of the world’s oldest living man is expected to pass to Gisaburo Sonobe of Japan, pending confirmation from his family. Bernal expressed that Mora’s legacy of goodness, wisdom, and joy will forever endure in the hearts and lives of those he touched.

Early Life (world’s oldest man)

Juan Vicente Pérez was born on May 27, 1909, in El Cobre, Venezuela, to Eutiquio Pérez and Edelmira Mora, as the ninth child in the family. During his early years, his family relocated to Los Paujiles in San José de Bolívar, Táchira, where they worked in agriculture, primarily harvesting sugar cane and coffee.

Despite the challenges of rural life, Pérez managed to become literate, thanks to a book given to him by his teacher, who fell ill shortly after Pérez started attending school. In 1938, he married Ediofina del Rosario García (1916–1997), with whom he had six sons and five daughters. Their first child, José Juan (1939–2013), was born in Los Paujiles.

At the age of 31, Juan Vicente Pérez and his wife made a significant move to the town of Caricuena, where they purchased a farm.

There, he worked alongside his brother Miguel Arcángel, and it was in Caricuena that the rest of their children were born. In 1948, Pérez assumed the role of sheriff of Caricuena, where his primary responsibility was to resolve land and family disputes. Subsequently, in the late 1950s, Pérez took on a job working on the construction of the highway between San José de Bolívar and Queniquea.

Despite the primitive conditions and lack of machinery, Pérez persevered, using only a pick and shovel. His daily wage was two bolívars, and he would only be paid for the work completed each day. It wasn’t until 1963 that Pérez obtained his first known identification document.

Sometime during the 1960s, he made the decision to sell his farmland in Caricuena and purchased property in San José de Bolívar, where he would reside for the remainder of his life. Throughout his life, Pérez remained a devout Catholic, adhering to his faith with unwavering commitment.

Later Life

After nearly 60 years of marriage, Juan Vicente Pérez’s wife passed away in 1997, leaving him to navigate life’s journey alone. In the absence of his wife, his daughter Edilia del Carmen assumed the responsibility of caring for him and managing the household, a role she fulfilled until her own passing in 2006. At the age of 109, Pérez encountered a bureaucratic hurdle when he was cheated out of a pension.

However, this issue was promptly resolved, ensuring that he received the support he was entitled to. Remarkably, as of his 111th birthday on 27 May 2020, six of Pérez’s children, comprising three daughters and three sons, were still alive, a testament to his enduring legacy and the strength of familial bonds.

Additionally, Pérez was blessed with a large and loving family, boasting 41 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren, each generation a testament to the remarkable longevity and vitality of his lineage.

Death

Juan Vicente Pérez passed away at his home in San José de Bolívar, Táchira, on April 2, 2024, at the remarkable age of 114 years and 311 days, just 55 days short of reaching the milestone of his 115th birthday.

Omas Rojas, the mayor of San José de Bolívar, honored Pérez’s memory by declaring three days of mourning and ordering all flags to be lowered at half-mast.
