The Sundance Film Festival, renowned for its celebration of independent cinema, is considering a significant change. After more than four decades in Park City, Utah, the festival is opening its doors to pitches from cities across the United States to become its new permanent home starting in 2027.

Sundance Film Festival

Since its inception in 1981 (originally as the Utah/U.S. Film Festival in 1978 in Salt Lake City), Sundance Film Festival has been synonymous with Park City’s luxury mountain backdrop. However, with its contract with the Sundance Institute up for renewal in two years, the festival is exploring new possibilities while keeping Utah in the mix as a potential continued home.

Eugene Hernandez, the festival’s director and head of public programming, emphasized the importance of responsibly considering the festival’s future in light of its global film community. While Park City has served as a fitting host for decades, Sundance is motivated by its commitment to ensuring the festival’s cultural, operational, and financial success moving forward.

As the Sundance Film Festival continues to grow, the need for expanded accessibility and inclusion becomes increasingly apparent. Sundance received a record 17,000 film submissions last year, highlighting the demand for a location with easier access to airports and state-of-the-art movie theaters to accommodate both programming and attendees.

While Utah remains an integral part of Sundance’s identity, infrastructure considerations play a key role in the decision-making process. Park City’s annual Hollywood influx has not always been without controversy, with concerns ranging from noise pollution to access issues. In 2016, tensions flared over the use of private chopper services shuttling festival-goers, prompting legal action from Summit County.

Starting April 17, Sundance Film Festival will begin accepting requests for information (RIFs) from potential hosts until May 1. The process will then move to a proposal stage, with founder Robert Redford and his daughter and board member Amy Redford playing active roles. A final decision on the host city is expected by the end of 2024 or early 2025.

Ebs Burnough, Sundance Institute Board Chair, expressed excitement about the opportunity to review proposals and collaborate with potential hosts to meet the needs of the independent film ecosystem and creative community at large. As Sundance embarks on this new chapter, it remains committed to its mission of championing independent voices and fostering artistic innovation on a global scale.

The Sundance Film Festival, founded by Robert Redford in 1978, has grown to become one of the most prestigious events in the film industry, particularly for independent cinema. Held annually in Park City, Utah, the festival showcases a diverse range of films, including documentaries, feature films, and shorts, from both established and emerging filmmakers around the world.

What sets Sundance apart is its focus on supporting independent voices and fostering creativity. The festival provides a platform for filmmakers to showcase their work to a global audience, often leading to distribution deals and critical acclaim. In addition to film screenings, Sundance also hosts panel discussions, workshops, and networking events, creating opportunities for collaboration and learning within the industry.

Over the years, Sundance has become synonymous with launching the careers of many celebrated filmmakers and actors. Films like “Reservoir Dogs,” “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” and “Whiplash” all premiered at Sundance before achieving commercial success and critical acclaim.

Beyond its impact on the film industry, Sundance also plays a significant role in the local economy of Park City and the state of Utah. The influx of filmmakers, industry professionals, and tourists during the festival boosts revenue for hotels, restaurants, and businesses in the area.

As Sundance continues to evolve, the recent announcement of its open call for pitches from cities across the United States to become its new permanent home starting in 2027 marks a significant milestone in its history. This move reflects Sundance’s commitment to sustainability and inclusivity, as well as its desire to expand its reach and accessibility to a broader audience.

Overall, the Sundance Film Festival remains a beacon for independent filmmakers and cinephiles alike, embodying the spirit of creativity, diversity, and innovation in cinema.
